Having played and absolutely loved this real adventure game from the 90’s I can tell you this. Fun and free of all those extra charges once you buy it once it’s worth every penny… Having actually called in sick to work just to play and finish colonization back in the early 90’s true story it’s that fun…
I love this game. But, the controls make it impossible to play. It’s unfortunate
Check online for the hot-key functions. Like: Using +/- to load/unload specific cargo. Pressing shift will then allow you to select a specific amount of that cargo also. It’s a bit clunky but it’s such a classic game, and nothing at all was changed. Don’t think it’s even available anymore but I’m still allowed to play it and clearly doesn’t need updates.
I sold have listened to the reviews. If I could give it 0 stars I would. The mouse navigation with the touch is absolutely awful and the keyboard takes up most the screen. It’s unplayable and I can’t get a refund
The controls are completely impossible to use on my iPhone. I can’t navigate or basically do anything at all without great difficulty. It makes me feel sick to try. I’m very disappointed.
I absolutely love this game but the gameplay interface makes impossible to play.
It is definitely a challenge to navigate the controls, but I’ve been playing this app version for quite a while now and the game is the same as my dos version, maybe a bit better. The biggest thing I wish it had was the map editor that was included in the dos version. I would like to create my own unique maps like I could on the computer, but on my iPad instead. Other than that if you are looking for the original gameplay and pixalized fun I enjoyed as a youngster, then this is the game you’ve been looking for.
Game is great however you can’t sell boycotted goods in Europe like you could in the normal game. Would love more options to move horizontally etc but can live with it for now
So I’ve put probably 200 hours into this game and I can say that almost all of the complaints about the controls and interface will be resolved with time and practice. if you use both of your thumbs and learn to hold one thumb on the screen to select something and then use the other thumb to drag, many of the issues go away. Additionally, learning how to use the keyboard is essential. The spacebar input tells a unit to pass for the turn. The F1 input opens the civilopedia on the selected tile. You can switch to tile select by using the view menu -> view pieces. I often use the keyboard arrow inputs to move units or navigate menus. The game plays identically to the original as far as I can tell. I played the original a lot in the 90’s. Needless to say I love the game. There is so much strategy to learn as you play. Lately I have discovered how much trading with the natives adds to the game. There are still some issues: 1. I’ve never figured out how to split resources. In the original a right click would allow me to split, say 90 tobacco, into two quantities to move a part onto a ship or wagon. In this version I haven’t figured out how to do this. 2. You often accidentally click when you want to just move the cursor. With practice this happens less often but it is frustrating. 3. I believe this bug is probably leftover from the original, but sometimes pieces don’t use the optimal path to move to a tile you tell them to go to. Sometimes they get so confused they just go back and forth between two tiles and waste all their movement points, even when a path exists! It’s pretty rare but it seems to happen more often around non-player units.
Sadly this game doesn’t work. It should work… but there’s no way to control the cursor effectively.
This games is a perfect port of the original colonization game, it operates exactly like it does on PC, with the only downside being that a phone can’t properly replicate a mouse control with left and right click functions in this specific context. Its wonky to use the clicking and mouse, but unlike what all the 1 star review bombers are saying, you CAN move diagonally in this game, and the controls work fine once you learn how they work. Your basic tap is like left mouse button every time. To do things like tell your currently selected unit to move to a position, you must click AND HOLD, which has hit or miss results on the holding depending on how much touchscreens like your fingers. To move things between a boat and a colony is the hardest, as you have to click and hold on the item you want to move, then once its picked up, you use a different finger to then drag the item over to the desired spot. All gameplay elements have been left the same, the game saves work, you can sell things and buy things from europe and your colonies do all the normal colony things. One thing I want to figure out though is how to get to a map editor to make custom maps! On the PC, there is a seperate launcher on Steam to make a custom map, then going back to the main game you can pick the map you made to then play on, and I’m hoping that can be on this mobile version too, either added to this version or as a seperate app that connects with this app. TL/DR: people are too impatient to learn the controls, game good.
Love this game please make it iOS friendly. Let us tap to select and double tap to move.
Th game is completely and totally unplayable. They spent maybe 30 seconds porting this over. The controls simply don’t work and this should never have been released.
Worst app I ever purchased!!
This game is one of my favorites from back in the day. I see all the negative reviews and I’m my opinion they just don’t want to embrace the keyboard. When I played the original it was all about using the keyboard, mice were new at the time. It would be nice to be able to increase the transparency of the keyboard though. Everything else is perfect.
The janky controls leave this classic completely useless! Save your galactic credits.
The is an all time favorite, far better then civilization, and I was really excited to see it on here. When I saw the reviews I had to confirm for myself. Yes, it’s exactly a copy from the classic game. Nothing changed at all, except we are not paying it on windows 3.1. They need to add mouse/keyboard support for tablets. That’s it. Then 5 stars. It’s really unplayable like this in except for the most desperate situations. The on-screen keyboard that covers half of everything and has a huge learning curve is game breaking.
Wow this is really terrible for an app that charges money to download. I mean, it’s cute that it looks like 1985, but it doesn’t work. So don’t charge for it.
Loved this game on PC. Apple, this is a huge miss! Cannot make any coherent use of controls on iPad Pro. Tried to download for Mac to see if any better on larger screen but it is incompatible with my 2019 IMac. Seriously? What happened to the famed Apple compatibility and support that I switched to Apple for? As much as I paid for high end iMac why are apps incompatible?
Update iOS and reboot and the app will work!
You can bring up the on-screen keyboard to perform short cuts like in the OG (like M to move, B to build, F to fortify), but there’s no way to move diagonally (OG you could use the number pad, but the on screen keyboard doesn’t have a number pad and the numbers at the top of the keyboard aren’t mapped to movement). Accessing the menus in game is also a bit frustrating. You can’t select a tile on the map and easily see what resources it produces via the menu/encyclopedia/colonopedia).
Can’t move anything
Unplayable. This is unforgivable. They should give everyone refunds since this is such a mess.
I LOVED finding this game from my childhood and have been playing it on my phone for a few years. Suddenly, it won’t work anymore. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling it. It gets to the first “tap to start page”, but then any tap completely closes out the game. Any suggestions on a fix? Would love to play again!
If I could tap the screen and/or use a Bluetooth keyboard, this would get 5 stars. But it cramps my fingers and makes me want to throw my iPad against a wall. Whyyyyyy?
No longer able to run this app on the newest iOS. Please update this jewel.
This is so close to being so good. As it is it’s literally a direct port, with your fingers moving the cursor and a tap being a click. But all iOS intuition goes wrong when you tap what you want to click, and end up in completely the wrong part of the map, because the “cursor” was on the minimal. I wanted so badly to like this. I loved this game when I was a kid, and Mac OS Catalina killed the ported version I had on my laptop… but this is genuinely unplayable. No ability to move diagonally (unless I’m missing something) and while I’m sure I could get used to switching between the “mouse” interface and the keyboard, it’s overwhelmingly annoying.
This doesn’t work on mobile. Maybe something with a mouse, but as is you can drag n drop anything which is the primary interface for this game.
Can’t escape out of the screen, just crashes on each load up. Tried restarting iPad. Completely unplayable. Probably shouldn’t be on the App Store. I have the game on my PC but thought it would be nice to play while on my iPad. Very disappointed because you have to pay for it. It shouldn’t be a compatibility roulette.
Just downloaded the game haven’t been able to even play it yet it keeps crashing every time I open it.
How do I get my money back? Crashes on launch after the Company Logo screen every single time.
Not working with the current iOS.
The app crashes as soon as I try to tap to continue on the second loading screen. Wish I’d read the recent reviews here, it seems this no longer works on the current version of iOS.
Game won’t even launch.
Great game, but unfortunately no longer updated! I wish I didn't buy it (not because it's a bad game, but because I can no longer play it).
This game is absolutely true to form of the original. Nostalgic and truly applaud the effort. The user interface has a learning curve, but is acceptable once you figure out the nuances. Well done overall.
The screen begins to load but kicks you out before the game starts.
wouldnt even load. Nothing more to say.
I loved this game growing up and I’m very frustrated to pay for this title just to have it crash on the quick start page. I tried re-installing and it continues to crash. I wish I could have experience the clunky user interface to be able to play a great game. However it is a non-starter and honestly I want my $3 back :(
I have never successfully launched the game. It crashes every time. Asking for a refund.
Each time the screen is touched, the app crashes. Every time. Unusable - the game requires touch input.
I used to play the original game on a potato when it first came out, but this version barely runs on my iPad Pro. Why does the music skip? Apple devices were originally designed to play music, why can’t this app can’t play the game music right? Just a terribly inefficient port, should have remade the game instead. The app is just betting on the nostalgia factor and they at got that part right, as I miss playing this game on my old potato, coz it ran better!
The courser isn’t intuitive to play game. The learning curve is steep to figure out how to do the finer points like buying/selling anything less than 100 units. After a few hours you’ll be as fast as running it on a PC.
I wish that they’d better thought out how to port this over. It’s such a simple game but they insisted on keeping the keyboard controls instead of moving to touch controls. Makes the game mostly unplayable.
The game does not work.
There’s really no point in playing the game if you can’t move diagonal. I’m an old man and don’t know how to request a refund, but I guess I spent three bucks on a port that doesn’t allow a basic function of the game.
It’s a straight port of colonization. A lot of complaints about the touch controls in here but it’s really not bad once you figure it out Tap = right click Press/hold = left click (“go to” functions and all) Press/hold, then with second finger press and drag = drag and drop The virtual keyboard isn’t ideal but works fine, especially if you learn to use the touch controls primarily
Great game, but the cursor is terrible. Also there is a bug where you cannot load and unload the cargo you want from ships in your colony. The developer does not care to fix this game and it will never be playable
Great game from the 90s. The only problem with it is interface. The game uses a simulated mouse and keyboard for controls. I got used to it after about 10 games.
